We are making the most of Easter and the Royal Wedding and by taking four work days off we are able to go away for eleven days !!!! Mag has always fancied the Alpes Maritane which is the area from the Med at Monaco and above and we are taking the skis and hoping to get a couple of days but the snow reports are not brilliant and a lot of resorts are already closed :(The left Felixstowe at 9, shuttle at twelve then drive all day and stop when we get tired. It was a very pretty drive especially with all the yellow rape fields. We made it to a services just short of Ville Franche and spent a very noisy night there with all the motorway traffic.
Then on the road today by nine, Chambery for the supermarket and the head for Tignes/Val desiere but changed our mind at the last minute and go to Val Thorens as it has glaciers and is very high. The drive up the mountain was good with waterfalls and we arrive at midday.
We parked at the free car park just below the town and are buying our half day lift passes at one after quickly packing a couple of rolls. There looks to be a lot of snow and the sun is out but it is windy – the trouble with being so high !!! We head up the Caron cable car but the Cime Caron (3200) is closed – too windy :( We spent over four hours exploring the area sadly the whole resort is like skiing a mogul field !!!! which we hate, the piste snow is in good condition considering how late in the season it is. It is icy up high and the off piste is poor but we made the most of it and had a picnic on some rocks and a hot chocolate :) We went on the Boismint, Moutiere, Grand Fond, Plateau drag, Portette and coming back to the van through Val Thoren we found the Plein Sud was still open at nearly five so had ago on that. There was several restaurants with live bands and club style dj’s with lots of dancing going on :)That was one run too many as we get back to our van at nearly six shot to pieces!!! We moved across the road a bit closer to the lifts and hope to get up early tomorrow and see if the pistes are better ,if not we will head away from the snow in search of waterfalls and wild flowers as we don’t like skiing enough to struggle with the bumpy conditions !!!
